Costume design workshop

Fellow filmmakers!
The constume design workshop is tonight!

Tend not to put enough attention to costumes and clothes when making a film? Let the actors wear whatever they are wearing? You might want to reconsider that after this workshop!

We at Cut are happy to announce that we are having a Q&A session with Katy Taylor. She has done costume design for various film and television productions - including HBO's Game of Thrones!

Come along, bring your questions! You know the place - the good old Boyd Orr, but this time on the fifth floor (room no. 507, lecture Theatre C).

Katy's website:

Hope to see you there.

Some Mid-Summer Announcements!

Hola! I hope everybody's had a fantastic summer! It's been a while since the last announcement, but I guess Gala Night was so good it knocked us all for a loop for a few months. Congratulations to everyone involved, it truly was a special night, and the films have never been better. And speaking of such, you can now find several of the past year's films on the Watch Now page.

And of course, before Gala Night a new board was announced. A couple of positions have been reshuffled or rearranged, and it is as follows:-

President: Lucy Drury
Secretary: Jim Entwistle
Treasurer/Fundraiser: Ewan Fletcher
Creative Director: Fiona Roberts
Workshop Co-Ordinator: Karoliina Pulkkinen
Events Co-Ordinator: Elise Davis-Keaveny
Webmaster: Dick Mitic

Good luck to them all as we await a cracking new school year of Cut Filmmaking! Stay tuned for announcements about our first events of the 2011/12 calendar, including the Freshers Fair and the ever-popular 48 Hour Film Competition!

26th April 2011
Gala Night Announcement

Drum roll! Our annual Gala Night will take place on Friday 20th May - less than a month away now! This year we shall be located at The Lighthouse, on Mitchell Lane just off Buchanan Street, with the customary afterparty at Buff Club - which is FREE ENTRY!

Filmmakers looking to submit their work to be shown at the event must fill out a submission form, to be handed in with their film at a suitable date. This form, along with further information regarding the event, can be found on our Gala Night page...

This has been Cut's best year yet, so let's make this year's Gala Night one to remember!

31st March 2011
Cut are Most Innovating Society! Plus, Gala Night!

At the SRC Awards this month, Cut Filmmaking won the award for Most Innovative Society! Thanks to all who turned out for our great events this past year, such as "Glasgow, I Love You" and the Q&As with Patrick Doyle and Mark Millar, and contributed to our success!

Also, coming to you in late May, Cut's biggest, classiest event of the year: Gala Night! Gala Night is a screening of a selection of films made by Cut members over the year, as well as a chance to have a drink, network, and celebrate the end of the year! Dress is semi-formal - it's fun to pretend not to be a student at least once a year! So get filming/finish editing your films if you want to be in with a chance of getting screened at Gala! Details of the event are TBC at the moment, but we'll keep you posted!

5th March 2011
Recent happenings, plus Patrick Doyle Q&A!

Thanks to all who attended Glasgow, I Love You and made it such a special event. It got a very warm write-up on the Film Festivsl website, which you can find here.

At the end of February we also had a Music/Soundtrack workshop (a review of which you can find here). Continuing a musical theme, we have another very special Q&A, this time with Oscar-nominated film composer Patrick Doyle on the 11th March. Patrick has a long-standing relationship with Ken Branagh, as well as scoring films such as Donnie Brasco, Gosford Park, and Bridget Jones' Diary. Details of the event can be found on our events page, as usual it is free, so come along and bring a friend!

13th February 2011
Projects Night, plus "Glasgow, I Love You!"

Thanks to all who turned out for the Mark Millar Q&A and made it a fantastic night. This week, we have another of our Tuesday Project Nights in the Tennents Basement Bar, followed by another very special event on the Thursday, our "Glasgow, I Love You!" screening at the Art School, which will showcase a number of short films made around Glasgow, including by members of Cut. Not to be missed! Details of these are on our Events page.

5th February 2011
Change of Venue for Mark Millar event,
plus Submissions for "Glasgow I Love You"

Due to expected high turnouts for the Mark Millar event, we have switched to a bigger venue - Room 1115 in the Adam Smith Building, 40 Bute Gardens. Take note of the change!

Also, Cut are taking film submissions for "Glasgow, I Love You", our upcoming event taking place during the Glasgow Film Festival. If you have a film to submit, email Cut at cutfilmmaking@gmail.com with details. Deadline for submissions is Thursday 10th February.

3rd February 2011
New films, Camera workshop, Mark Millar!!!

Thanks to all who came along to the 48 Hour Filmmaking Competition and made it such a brilliant event! All three films were of very high standard, and they will appear on the Watch Now page soon. In the meantime, you can find them on Cut's Vimeo channel.

Next week we have two big events, the first of which is our latest workshop, a camera class hosted by Desmond O'Hare from the BBC, who will run through everything you'd want to know, plus a few tips and tricks of the trade.

The following evening (a Cut event on a Wednesday?! Who'd have thunk it) we have a very exciting event lined up, a Q&A Session with Kick-Ass writer and producer Mark Millar, who will be answering all of your weird and wonderful questions. This event promises to be at full capacity, so get there early to get a seat! Details of both events are on our Events page.

15th January 2011
Projects Night, 48 Hour Competition & Re-Freshers Party!

Welcome back everyone! Hope you all had a good Christmas and New Years. This Tuesday, Cut is hosting the first of our fortnightly Networking & Projects Nights for the new year! This is a great opportunity to network with other students interested in filmmaking in a strictly casual environment. Come and have a drink, look around people's upcoming projects, and chat with other filmmakers. As always, everyone is welcome, even if you aren't sure what area of filmmaking you'd like to try, or even if you don't want to get involved in a project quite yet.

Also, we are hosting another 48 Hour Film Competition next weekend, for anyone who missed it in Freshers Week, or for those who loved it so much they want another go! This is the first time we've had a second competition in the school year, so tell your friends, and help convince us we should be doing it every year!

As always, the competition weekend will finish with a Cut! Party at the Buff Club. As was our Freshers shindig, this Re-Freshers party is open to everyone, regardless of whether you took part in the competition, whether you've been to events before or if you've never attending anything vaguely Cut-related ever. Come for the cheap booze and tunes, stay for the cheap booze and tunes (and possibly the company).

Further details regarding all these events can be found on our Events page.

5th December 2010
Cut! Party and Pirate Cinema!

Cutfilmmaking and Big Screen Glasgow are hosting a night celebrating student talent in film and video making. The event will take place on Tuesday 7th December in the Vic at Glasgow School of Art at 6pm, and is FREE and open to the public. There will be a large audience so this represents an unmissable opportunity to showcase your work. This event is planned as an informal screening, but we still encourage you to mingle and talk film as we've invited students from all Glasgow's universities and colleges so there will be lots of new blood for lots of new projects.

This will also double as Cut's end-of-semester party, so come along for the cheap booze and acceptable company before we all depart for Christmas!

28th November 2010
"I Love Luci" Workshop!

The director and lead actor of the multi-award-winning Glaswegian comedy short film ‘I Love Luci’ are coming to speak to CUT! The film has done brilliantly on the international film festival circuit; London, Rome, Valencia, Lisbon, Bratislava, somewhere in Russia, to name but a few! Click here to check out the trailer.

Colin Kennedy (director) and Colin Harris (lead actor) will screen their film (time and location details on our Events page) and then take us through the whole filmmaking process, from conceiving the idea to location scouting, blocking scenes, camera angles, distribution and everything in between! They will be taking your questions after, so be ready to pick their brains. This will be a great opportunity to hear from world class short filmmakers, so don’t miss out!

As with all CUT events, it’s free and all are welcome!

21st November 2010
Sound Workshop, plus Website Changes!

Cut is hosting another amazing and free workshop. This sound workshop will be hosted by the lovely and amazing Jim Hunter who has had many years of experience working for the BBC! He will go over the basics of different kinds of sound, types of recording, and types of microphones. As always, people of all levels of experience are welcome! So come along and bring a friend and learn how to SOUND amazing and make your films sound good too!

Also, you may have noticed several changes to the website. Our Photos page is rather self-explanatory, it contains snaps of previous Cut events; and our Outreach page showcases the projects Cut have made in conjuction with outside organisations to promote worthwhile causes. Many new films have also gone up on the Watch Now page, so er... watch them, now!

The Projects section of the website can now be found on the forum, where you can post your own projects yourself rather than have to send them to us!

14th November 2010
Change of Venue for Next Project Night

This week will see the next Networking & Project Night rather than a workshop, as we have big plans for the last couple of weeks! However, it shall not be hosted in the Tennents Basement Bar this week, but will be in the room at the back of the Old Schoolhouse (formerly The Primary) at the university end of Woodlands Road (just across the street from the St Andrew's Building). The start time is back to being 7pm, and last week's visiting producer Julian Dismore will be in attendance again with copies of his new book for anyone who wants to learn the ins and outs of being a TV producer. See you all there!

6th November 2010
Projects Night, and Talk from TV Producer Julian Dismore

At 8pm Cut will be hosting our Networking & Projects Night in the Tennents Pub Basement. Come along with an idea or a script, or just come for a drink and a chat and a nosey round upcoming projects. We're starting a bit later because we encourage you to attend this talk at 6.30, Boyd Orr Building, Lecture Theatre A:

TV producer, Julian Dismore, is doing a talk called 'TV: Getting In and Getting On!' for all of you interested in pursuing a career in television and/or the creative industries. The event is being organized by the Careers Service and they would like you to register for the event if you intend to go. (www.gla.ac.uk/careers), click on 'Jobs & Events', log in and register for the event. See you then!

6th November 2010
Cut and GUST Ceilidh!

Cut and GUST are hosting a fundraising ceilidh in the GUU Dining Room on Thursday 11th November at 7PM in order to progress towards mutual camera repair! There will be dancing, drinking and just a fun time all round, so get your tickets now! Get them from the SRC for £4, or on the door on the night for £5. Hope to see everyone there!

30th October 2010
Directing of Photography Workshop!

This week we shall be presenting the Directing of Photography workshop, with Cut and GUST veteran Darren Eggenschwiler taking us through the ins and outs of budget cinematography, from camera operating, lighting, shot composition, film crews, budget 3D filming (!) and much much more. As always, this workshop is free, and will be at 7pm this Tuesday, in Room 407 (Lecture Theatre A) in the Boyd Orr Building (maps and further information can be found on the Events page). Hope to see you all there!

10th October 2010
3rd Networking & Projects Night!

Details of our next Networking & Projects Night are up on the Events page, again in Tennents Basement bar. Come along, have a pint, have a chat!

Again, anyone can bring along a script or even just general outline of a project they are thinking of making, but if you'd like to alert us about it, or maybe just seek advice before the event, email Cut with the details of the project.

See you all there!

17th October 2010
Make-up and Prosthetics Workshop!

Our next workshop of the year is for Make-Up and Prosthetics, and will be hosted by the very talented James Clark, who will be demonstrating how to apply fake cuts, bruises and more! This is a very hands-on workshop, and unfortunately we can't accomodate a massive lecture hall so the workshop is being split into two hour-long practical sessions, with 40 places in total (20 in each hour). You can sign up for a place through the Facebook event for the workshop, though there are very limited places left as the workshop has proven popular in the past!

If you do miss out on this workshop, don't worry - we'll be having another one next semester, so you'll get another shot at it very soon!

2nd October 2010
Screenwriting Workshop

Our second workshop of the semester will be Screenwriting - after all, a film's got to begin somewhere! It will take place in Lecture Theatre 718 in the Adam Smith Building. We're also very happy to announce that the workshop will be taken by Eleanor Yule, who has been been nominated for a BAFTA and won the jury award at the Celtic Film and Television Festival in 2004. This promises to be a very interesting evening, and we hope to see you there!

29th September 2010
Forum Launch!

Thanks to everyone who attended our first Projects Night of the year, we hope you all enjoyed it and signed up for all the scripts!

We mentioned on the night that we were launching a Cut forum, and I'm happy to announce it is now online! You can go there via the navigation above. Its purpose is to act as a filmmaking Gumtree, if you like - providing an online bulletin board for budding filmmakers to seek out others to assist in making their movies, and for those with a wealth of experience in filmmaking to offer their services.

There is also a Film Therapy section, where you can ask questions about filmmaking, or discuss more specific difficulties you've been having. There's bound to be someone who will be able to answer your question!

Anyone can access the forum and read posts, but in order to create posts you will need to register - this only takes a minute and stops spambots from filling the board with junk. So get registered, get posting, and help expand the Cut network!

ENTER THE FORUM

26th September 2010
Networking and Project Night #1

Thanks to everyone who came along to the workshop last week, what an amazing turnout! Hopefully a good number of you will be attending our very first Networking and Project Night in the Tennents Bar basement on Byres Road. This is a great opportunity to network with other students interested in filmmaking in a strictly casual environment. Come and have a drink, look around people's upcoming projects, and chat with other filmmakers. No filmmaking experience is required; everyone is welcome.

If you have a project that you're trying to get off the ground, then bring it along and get people interested and find the right talent! Your project doesn't have to be fully formed, it can just be an idea you've had. If you could e-mail Cut with the name of the project by Tuesday morning then Martin, our Creative Director, can make you a wee sign and allocate you an area in the pub.

Note that this event takes place in the basement room of the bar. Hopefully it is easy enough to find, and we shall see you all there!

20th September 2010
IMPORTANT - Workshop Time Tomorrow

The time for the Fundamentals of Filmmaking Workshop tomorrow on the Events page has been wrong for the past week - it starts at 6pm, not 7pm. It's been duly changed and I hope those who are thinking of attending read this before tomorrow night. Sorry!

On a better note, thank you to everyone who attended our events in Freshers Week! We had much success on our Freshers Fair stall, signing up over 200 new members, and winning an award for Most Attention Grabbing Stall! On top of that, the 48 Hour Competition was especially popular this year, and the two brilliant films it produced were very well received at the party last night at the Buff Club. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves, and hopefully we'll see you on Tuesday (and beyond)!

11th September 2010

First Workshop - Scriptwriting

The first Cut! workshop of the year is fast approaching - come and join us this Thursday, the 8th of October, as we start at the very beginning of the filmmaking process and learn about the fine art of Scriptwriting. No experience is needed to attend any of our workshops, so pop along even if you've never written before and have some word-based fun with us.

The workshop will be at 6:30pm at the St. Andrew's Building - there will be a notice at the entrance of the building to say which room the workshop will be held in when you arrive. If you don't yet know where the St. Andrew's Building is, never fear, here's a map. It's number E14 on Eldon Street, opposite the Primary and near to Uisge Beatha.

See you on Thursday!

23th September 2009

Firstly, thanks to all who participated in the 48 Hour Film Competition, it was great fun to make and both of the films looked really good.

Our first monthly Project Night will be at 7pm on next Tuesday 29th September at the lovely Uisge Beatha on Woodlands Road. There should be a few scripts on show, but even if you're not looking to get involved in a film yet, come along anyway, have a drink, and get to know some new people!

Freshers Week

Summer's over, and Freshers Week is just around the corner! We have a lot planned for this week....

Tuesday 15th & Wednesday 16th, 10am-4pm:

Freshers Fair! Our stall looks superb this year, so come and find us in the Bute Hall to become a member, get info about upcoming events and ask us any questions. Get there before the cake runs out.

Friday 18th & Saturday 19th:

The 48-Hour Filmmaking Project will run from Friday afternoon across the weekend, leading up to a showing of the films and a party at Buff Club on Sunday night. We'll be making quick, short films in groups - the project is a chance to immediately get stuck in with learning how the filmmaking process works, while meeting new people and having fun at the same time!

We will meet 2pm-5pm on Friday (location TBC) for a group writing session to create our scripts, then get together on Saturday to film during the day around the West End and edit our footage in the evening. If you have any questions send us an email or come and ask us at the Freshers Fair.

Sunday 20th, 8pm:

We will have a screening of the 48-Hour Project films, as well as some of the movies we made last year, and a post-Freshers Week Cut! party at Buff Club. Entrance to the club is via The Butterfly and the Pig pub on Bath Street (http://www.thebutterflyandthepig.com/) and the event is free. Doors at 8pm, films shortly after, then we get Buff Club to ourselves til the main clubnight starts at 11pm (note - no under 18s will be allowed in the club once the main clubnight starts, and anyone arriving after 11pm will have to pay to get in). There will be cheap drinks offers especially for us, so come and drink, chat and have a bit of a dance. All are welcome and if you want to become a member you can do that on the night as well.

12th September 2009
Welcome to the site!

Welcome to the newly designed Cut! website. Everything available on this site can be navigated to via the links below the main logo.

One thing I do have to say, the site was designed with Firefox, and therefore it's slightly tailored for that browser. It'll still work in Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Safari and all the other browsers, of course, but some parts of the site might be slightly out of place with browsers other than Firefox, so I'd recommend downloading Firefox for the best Cut! website experience. :-)

Also, if you find any bugs or glitches within the site, email me at martin@cutfilmmaking.com and I'll get it fixed asap.

Other than those minor quibbles, the site is good to go. Enjoy!
